INSTRUMENT
SHARPENING, NEVER A DULL MOMENT
A Hands-On Workshop Supported, in part, by an educational grant from Crosstex, Dux Dental, Hu-Friedy, Kerr TotalCare, and Philips Sonicare. Friday, September 27, 2013 9:00am-12:00pm (3 CE hrs) Exhibit Floor Limited to 30 participants. Must bring loupes. This workshop demonstrates how to preserve the original instrument design and shape while creating sharp edges, using a variety of hand and mechanical techniques and devices, loupes and lights. A slide presentation and interactive dialogue lay the groundwork for clinical instruction and participant practice, using hand sharpening techniques and several mechanical instrument sharpeners with magnification. Participants will leave with new instruments and an understanding of the key geometrical relationships between instrument surfaces and edges important for all sharpening techniques. Course Objectives: · learn optimal periodontal instrument designs · understand how to preserve optimal instrument design while sharpening · discuss objectives and goals of sharpening · practice with and compare various hand sharpening techniques · practice with and compare various mechanical sharpening technology and techniques Recommended for… Dentists, Hygienists, and Assistants. ![]() Nancy Andrews, RDH graduated from, and was a clinical instructor in dental hygiene at University of Southern California and teaches general and oral pathology, clinical radiology, dental hygiene and infection control at West Coast University Dept. of Dental Hygiene. She is a nationally recognized speaker, author and consultant, focusing on infectious diseases, clinical safety, instrument sharpening, ergonomics and preventive dentistry. Ms. Andrews is a “top 100 U.S. Speaker”, and is on the California Dental Assoc., ADA and OSAP speaker’s / Consultants bureaus. Ms. Andrews is an experienced author of journal articles, has contributed to textbook chapters and guidelines such as the 2009 ADA Infection Control Wall Poster, CE courses, newsletters, product literature and website content.
