Biofilm, Gingival Inflammation and its Management Supported by an educational grant from Colgate Friday,
November 5, 2010 8:45am-11:45am
(3 CE credits) The plaque biofilm is the cause of the two most common oral
diseases- caries and periodontal disease.
Understanding the biology of the biofilm and how it initiates disease is
critical to managing this disease-causing entity effectively. This session will focus on the
plaque biofilm and the inflammation it triggers in the local soft tissue. The biology of the plaque biofilm will
be reviewed in detail, as will the inflammatory response it stimulates. The session will also review OTC and Rx
chemotherapeutic agents that can be employed to control the plaque biofilm. Topics

erosion are two common dental issues seen in patients today. They often appear
together, but can also present independent of the other. Improved oral health
results in teeth being retained longer but also being at greater risk for
gingival recession and exposure of dentin. An increased consumption of acidic
beverages has also contributed to an increased incidence of erosion and
dentinal hypersensitivity. This course will provide the participant an overview
of the biological process of dentinal hypersensitivity and erosion, diagnostic
assessment methods, and treatment options that can be incorporated in every
dental practice.
Recommended for...the entire dental team.
