Forensic Odontology: The Tales that Teeth Tell!

Forensic Odontology:  the art and science of dentistry as it applies to the law.  The objective of this presentation is to familiarize the audience with the need, role, and responsibility of forensic odontology.  

The presentation will elaborate on the responsibilities of the forensic odontologist with various government agencies. Emphasis will be the role of the forensic odontologist in multiple fatality incidents.

This program will graphically depict recent mass disasters in which forensic odontologists were instrumental in the recovery process. The 2004 Asian tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, the World Trade Center and American Airlines Flight 587 will be discussed.

Dean Cherpelis is a 1984 Graduate of CUNY, Queens College with a BA in Biology and a 1988 graduate of the UB School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Cherpelis is currently in private practice in Bayside, NY.  He is a Deputy Chief Forensic Odontologist for the Office of Chief Medical Examiner City of New York and served as a Tour Commander for the World Trade Center and American Airlines Flight 587 disaster recoveries. Dr. Cherpelis is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, the Academy of General Dentistry, the International Academy for Dental-Facial Esthetics, and an Associate Fellow of the New York Academy of Dentistry.
