Diagnosis and Management of Oral Cancer

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is the most common malignancy to affect the oral cavity. This program will provide the clinician with an understanding of the demographics, clinical appearance and causes of various types of oral SCC. Optimal patient outcome depends on early diagnosis, but unfortunately the majority of patients are diagnosed in advanced disease stages. Another objective is to use clinical cases to illustrated key concepts of the diagnostic process and the multidisciplinary team management of oral SCC. Other topics to be reviewed are various treatment options and their complications, supportive care, and techniques to replace surgically resected oral tissues.

Clinical appearance and high-risk sites for oral SCC
Grading and staging of oral SCC and patient prognosis
Treatment of oral SCC: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, PUVA, immune-modulating therapy
Challenges to restoring function and esthetics after oral SCC treatment

Dr. Lynn W. Solomon DDS '95, Oral Pathology '00, MS Oral Sciences '05, served as a faculty member in the Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences at the UB School of Dental Medicine from 2000 to 2006. Dr. Solomon is Board Certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and became a faculty member in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Tuffs University School of Dental Medicine in 2007, where she is currently an associate professor. Dr. Solomon has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and does research on the autoimmune response to p63 protein.

Maureen Sullivan DDS '87, has served as Chief, Department of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Prosthetics at Roswell Park Cancer Institute since 2000. She has also served as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the UB School of Dental Medicine since 2004. She was Clinical Instructor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry from 1994-2004. Dr. Sullivan has published in many peer reviewed journals and her research involves the use of Autofluorence in the diagnosis of oral and oral pharyngeal cancer. She is the Principle Investigator on several chemo-preventative clinical trials for patients at high risk for head and neck malignancies.
