New Frontiers in Periodontal Medicine

Alumni Speaker Series

Thursday, October 22, 2009

8:30am-11:30am (3 CE credits)

The association between periodontal disease and common chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and respiratory infections has made more aggressive diagnosis and management of periodontal disease, as well as co-management of these chronic conditions with our medical colleagues, an important part of the present and future practice of dentistry.

This program will provide an understanding of new concepts in periodontal disease pathogenesis and management.  It will also provide clinical practitioners with up-to-date information on the associations of periodontal disease with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and the clinical implications of these associations.

Finally, the recent finding that medical care costs are reduced by dental treatment provides a compelling argument for co-management of patients by medical and dental health teams, and for more liberal insurance coverage of dental treatment in patients with these conditions.  The future of dentistry surely will reflect this new information, and points to dental practice as an important point of contact for not only maintenance of oral health and treatment of dental disease, but also co-management of several important chronic diseases of man.

Topics to be covered include biofilm and inflammation, the periodontal management triad, periodontal systematic interactions, clinical implications, and the dental practice of the future.

Recommended for…. Dentists, Hygienists, Dental Assistants and Students.
