What’s New In Operative Dentistry?

The practice of Operative Dentistry has never been more exciting or challenging. Revolutionary preventive strategies allow dentists to abandon “drill and fill” paradigms of the past. The demand for aesthetic treatment grows as significant improvements are made in bonding agents, ceramics, and resin composite systems. However, the dental materials market is flooded with new, often unproven products, making materials selection difficult. At the same time, less emphasis is being placed on the teaching of amalgam and cast gold restorations in dental school curricula, resulting in many dentists graduating with decreased proficiency and confidence in placing these restorations.

Jeffery S. Nordin, DDS, MS was raised in Jamestown, NY and attended SUNY at Buffalo where he received a BS in Biology. He continued on to SUNY at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, receiving his DDS degree in 1989. He went on to complete a Master’s in Operative Dentistry and a certificate in Preventive Dentistry from the University of Iowa in 2000. He also received his Board certification from the American Board of Operative Dentistry in 2003.
Dr. Nordin is a CAPT in the United States Navy and currently serves as the Navy Surgeon General’s Specialty Leader for Operative Dentistry. He is also the chair, Department of Operative Dentistry at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, MD. He is a member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry; Board of Councilors for the American Board of Operative Dentistry; and the Editorial Board for the Operative Journal.
