MEDICAID, MANAGED CARE AND CONTRACTING Supported, in part, by an educational grant from NYSDA

This course will review the shift to managed care in commercial benefit plans and publicly funded health plans (Medicaid). The dental benefit arena has undergone a significant transformation with the introduction of new, commercial products and changes in government-funded programs. Underlying this transformation are business relationships based on dentists joining together with patients’ third party payers. The course will examine managed care models in dentistry today and their impact on dental practices. It will explore the transition of New York’s dental Medicaid program into managed care and the implications of the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) for dentistry in New York. Lastly, the course will review participating provider contract negotiations and related issues.

At the completion of the course, participants should have an understanding of: · Managed care: the rationale and implications · Types of dental managed care plans · The shift in Medicaid to managed care companies · Dentistry in the Affordable Care Act in New York · Participating provider contracting

Dr. Shub received a doctorate in sociology from the Graduate School of the City University of New York. Her graduate studies concentrated primarily on sociological theory and topics in medical sociology. Her dissertation was a study of dental student socialization. Dr. Shub was recognized as an honorary fellow by the International College of Dentists in 2012.
Dr. Shub has been named an honorary fellow by the International College of Dentists. She has published numerous articles and lectures on a variety of topics including dental practice and dental benefits. In this presentation, Dr. Shub does not refer to products of a commercial company with which she has a significant relationship.
