The New York State Society of Orthodontists presents special guest faculty Dr. David Sarver Contemporary Orthodontics... The Role of Appearance & Esthetics in Diagnosis and Treatment Planning In his presentation Contemporary orthodontics-The Role of Appearance & Esthetics in Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, Dr. Sarver will present contemporary concepts in macroesthetic facial analysis, other divisions of esthetic classification and interdisciplinary treatment planning. Extensive data exists on how the face and smile mature and age, and knowledge of these changes is a powerful tool in planning overall restoration of a youthful appearance. Also included will be recently developed concepts in quantification of the characteristics of the smile. A systematic evaluation and classification of the smile has been developed for smile quantification in all three physical dimensions, with a logical transfer to the fourth dimension-time. This material is based on the AJODO article series named the recipient of the Dewel Award in 2003 for the best clinical article in the Journal. In the era of the new Soft tissue paradigm, the orthodontic clinician may design the smile through visual patient interaction, which then dictates new concepts in bracket placement, directional of growth modification, surgical considerations, and interdisciplinary coordination with the esthetic dentist. Drawing on lessons from esthetic dentistry, Dr. Sarver will illustrate how orthodontic esthetics can be greatly improved with cosmetic tooth and gingival contouring to further refine and enhance your clinical cases. Learning objectives: The attendee after this presentation should be able to: 1. Recognize the 3 major divisions of facial and dental esthetics 2. Learn new methodologies in determining bracket placement to enhance smile esthetics 3. Incorporate principles of cosmetic dentistry in reshaping anterior teeth for maximum esthetics.
