Managing Adult Patients with Special Needs:

Special Challenges and Special Rewards

This course is intended for the practitioner who is interested in learning more about treating patients with a variety of special needs. An overview of the history and current state of the environment will be discussed. Selected conditions and their implications for dental treatment as well as specific clinical techniques to enhance patient compliance will be presented.

The participant will gain an understanding of the unique opportunities presented by special care dentistry, including the possibility of expanding an existing practice and realizing the rewards associated with incorporating patients with special needs.

At the completion of this program, the participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the unique dental, medical, and psychosocial concerns of the special needs patient.
  2. Be familiar with historical and societal trends that have led to the current practice environment.
  3. Understand the barriers to care experienced by people with disabilities.
  4. Develop a deeper understanding of common developmental conditions and their impact on the provision of dental care.
  5. Incorporate simple techniques to enhance the success of dental visits.

The current literature in special care is the basis for recommendations given.

Recommendations are presented in the context of risk:benefit analyses. Where appropriate, it is stated that recommendations are based on many years of practice and might not be applicable in all cases or to all practices.

A list of references will be given as a part of the course handout.

This course is geared toward practicing dentists but would also be appropriate for hygienists and dental assistants.
