Spring 2012 CE Cafe' Distance Learning Lecture Series Wednesday, April 18
Helping Tobacco Users Quit:
Your Role as an Effective Cessation Counselor The dental office is an excellent venue for providing
tobacco intervention services. This course will educate the practitioner
on tobacco and nicotine and their effects on oral health. It will provide
an overview of assessing risk factors for oral cancer and detecting and
diagnosing oral cancer. Tobacco interventions will be discussed including
resources, pharmacotherapy, and nicotine replacement therapy. Information
provided is supported by the Tobacco Cessation Center of Western New York. Benefits of Attending After this course you will have training to systematically
identify smokers, provide interventions, and follow tobacco dependence
treatment guidelines.
Course Objectives 1. Understand and recognize tobacco dependence as a chronic
disease 2. Identify the effects of tobacco on teeth and oral health 3. Deliver effective tobacco interventions and nicotine
replacement therapy
Scientific Basis Eighty three percent of adults see a dental hygienist each
year and spend an average of 30 minutes with each patient. Dental professionals
are in a key position to show patients the health effects of tobacco and
effectively help patients quit. Benefits and Risks As a dental professional, your knowledge base will benefit
your patients by providing effective smoking cessation and intervention
therapies. There are limited to no risks in providing these interventional
services to patients. Reference Provided Handouts of the power point presentation will be provided
and resources from the New York State Smokers Quitline. Intended Audience Dentists, hygienists, auxiliary staff
Guest Faculty Dr. Rossitto is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of
Technology with a BS in Biological Sciences and a graduate of SUNY Buffalo
School of Dental Medicine where she earned her DDS. She is certified under the
Northeast Regional Board and completed a General Practice Residency with a
focus on Dental Oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. She currently
works in dental private practice and is a staff dentist at Roswell Park Cancer
Institute where she is also the Director of the American Dental Association-Accredited
General Practice Residency Program. Dr. Frustino is a graduate of the University of Rochester
with a BA in Biology and Psychology and a graduate of SUNY Buffalo School of
Dental Medicine where she earned her DDS with thesis honors. She is
certified under the Northeast Regional Board and completed a General Practice
Residency at Roswell Park Cancer Institute where she remains on staff in both
the Department of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Prosthetics and the Department of
Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences. She is a part time associate
